The Makarov, weighing in at 25 ounces empty, is a semi-automatic, blowback-operated handgun, with an external safety and de-cocker: it can fire double- and single-action. A history of the Makarov is found in a good article on Wikipedia: Makarov pistol - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia and - Makarov Instruction Booklet is also a good source of information.īecause it has commercial appeal, the Makarov and variants may still be in production in Russia, Bulgaria, and China. The Makarov first appeared as the Russian military side arm in 1951, continuing in service through the collapse of the USSR in 1991. The Makarov, which replaced the Tokarev TT-30 in military service (1930-1951) is in my opinion a copy of the Walther PP, which was first built in 1929.
